Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.
As part of our growing Materials and Process team Joby Aviation is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Material Method and Allowable Engineering manager to lead the development, validation, and deployment of advanced material allowables and structural analysis methodologies. This key leadership role will focus on composite and metallic structures, enabling innovative design substantiation and supporting certification efforts across multiple platforms.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain validated structural analysis methods and standards in alignment with current industry standards and regulatory guidance.
- Develop roadmap for the development of structural design data and structure analysis (including repairs), as method of compliance to regulations.
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans and test methods to validate analysis tools and generate statistically based design values (material allowables) for structural sizing.
- Author technical white papers and internal documentation that articulate novel substantiation methodologies and support regulatory compliance.
- Build, validate, and implement efficient, semi-automated analysis tools for composite (monolithic and stiffened), metallic components, and structural joints.
- Create standardized report templates and documentation frameworks to ensure consistency and rigor across engineering deliverables.
- Set up and develop a team - define and execute a strategic team growth plan, including hiring, training, and capability development, to expand team expertise and throughput.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with materials, design, manufacturing, and certification teams to integrate allowables into product development lifecycles.
- Represent the organization in technical reviews, supplier interactions, and industry forums, as required.

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in structural engineering, materials engineering, or analysis methods development, with a strong focus on composites and/or metallic.
- Proven track record of developing and validating material allowables and structural analysis methods.
- Strong leadership and project management skills, with experience leading engineering teams or projects.
- Fluency with FAA/EASA certification processes and relevant standards (e.g., CMH-17, MMPDS, ASTM).
- Familiarity with use of new material in design and structural substantiation. Traditional multi-level testing and analysis development approach used for metallic and composite programs
- Experience with analytical methods in structural bonded and mechanically fastened joints for composite structures
- Experience with test planning, statistical data reduction, and tools such as MATLAB, Python, or other relevant software.
Desired
- Experience with automated or semi-automated structural analysis tools (e.g., FEA scripting, custom Excel tools).
- Knowledge of bonded and bolted joint analysis.
