Role Summary
The SMS Program Manager is a lead subject matter expert in Safety Management Systems at Alaska Airlines (AS), Hawaiian Airlines (HA), and Horizon Air (QX). As an individual contributor, this role collaborates across the organization driving continuous improvement of the SMS in accordance with FAA regulations and ICAO standards, defines long term strategies to ensure regulatory compliance, and influences how the company addresses safety concerns, hazards, and risk throughout the operation.
Key Duties
Leads cross divisional SMS working groups to develop standardized procedures, tools, and share best practices for a robust SMS.
Designs Safety Management System (SMS) procedures to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance by supporting Safety Risk Assessments, identifying hazards through Safety Assurance and Safety Risk Management.
Oversees safety reporting policy, SMS procedures, safety promotion, and continuous improvement of SMS.
Collaborates and maintains a positive working relationship with the FAA and internal stakeholders.
Develops, revises, and maintains the AS/HA/QX SMS Manual policies and procedures.
Creates, revises, and facilitates SMS training and provides user support.
Create the framework for leadership to assess hazards and risk at divisional meetings.
Help to develop and drive timely roadmaps for the growth and sustainability of SMS.
Represents Alaska Air Group at industry, government, and regulatory agency meetings as necessary.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required
7 years of experience in in a technical airline role that provided exposure to data relevant to SMS programs.
Bachelor’s degree or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening) for all levels of the organization.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Smartsheet, and Outlook).
Detailed oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to confidently lead regular meetings which include members from the FAA, union(s), and company leadership.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum age of 18.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Preferred
Aviation safety experience.
Prior management experience.
Knowledge of FAA SMS requirements and inputs (SRAs, ASAP, irregularity reports, FOQA, Employee Injury Review System, IEP, LOSA, etc.).
Knowledge of SMS and industry best practices, data and text analysis, statistical analysis, and risk analysis.

Salary Range
$117,500 - $176,300 / year
Salary Details
Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
